Salaries in the Romanian Gendarmerie have gradually increased over the years, and for 2026, it is projected that military personnel’s earnings could reach substantial amounts, especially when including bonuses, overtime, and compensations for special missions. Even those at the start of their careers can exceed 6,000 lei net, while experienced individuals or those in leadership roles may earn over 8,000 lei monthly, depending on their responsibilities and the unit’s location.

In 2025, a gendarme who was recruited from an external source, meaning they did not have military training, received a net salary of 6,632 lei, equivalent to about 1,335 euros, while the gross income reached 8,639 lei. This total reflects both the base salary and additional payments for hours worked beyond the regular schedule.

A significant portion of this income was generated from extra work. The young gendarme accumulated 61 hours of additional work, particularly during weekends and legal holidays, for which they earned approximately 1,160 lei in addition to the base salary. This clearly demonstrates that overtime can have a major impact on monthly earnings, even for those just starting their careers.

Generally, salaries within the Romanian Gendarmerie are determined by several key factors, such as military rank, years of service, and the type of missions carried out. In addition to the base salary, earnings include bonuses for special working conditions, legally provided allowances, and overtime pay. The area of operation and the responsibilities assumed can also influence the final salary level.

Thus, a rookie gendarme or one with limited experience can achieve earnings exceeding 6,000 lei net per month. In contrast, those with experience, higher ranks, or involved in special missions can earn between 7,500 and 8,000 lei monthly, or even more. For officers or those holding leadership positions, the earnings can surpass these thresholds.
